If That’s Your Story, Are You Sticking To It?

It’s Spring and everyone seems ready to sing a new song. As the earth tilts towards the sun this is the season that heralds new growth and the invitation to “spring forth“. Most everything in nature is starting anew now and that can include you! If you’re on track with those resolutions you may have set over 3 months ago, kudos! If now is your time to come out of hibernation and begin a little spring cleaning, then a great place to start is with your story!

Our lives are designed and defined by our stories. They have a beginning, middle, and an end, and we are entitled to create them in a way that is dynamic and compelling to us as an individual. It is our birthright. With the main drivers of our lives built on memories, perceptions, experiences, habits and patterns, it is easy to be repetitive. However, with the amazing shift in consciousness these days, we can get real leverage for change by making our lives current and relevant.

As we look at how we tell the story of our life, it’s important to move past the 1990’s catchphrase “that’s my story and I’m sticking to it” and into the current slogan “how’s that working for you?” because curiosity is a precursor to change.

Because we are always seeking a form of happiness, let’s look at what it takes to write, tell, and live your best story.

Choose your happy ending. This is the time to really let yourself go to the last chapter first, guilt-free! Choose an outcome that really resonates with your heart’s desire. Now you get to purposefully create your story with the thoughts, feelings, behaviors and action steps that support that finale. Remember, your best future is created by looking forward through the windshield, not in your rear-view mirror.

Backfill the chapters. Design your story by learning from your history, not repeating it. This takes forward thought, envisioning and the willingness to break old habits of all kinds. Be courageous. Be bold. Don’t open the gates to your old Trojan horse filled with limiting beliefs, fears, and old experiences. Instead view the past as a valuable teacher that helps you move from contrast to clarity; if you don’t want “that”, then you do want “this”! Write it down. Spell it out. Test your greatness. Expect more of and for yourself. Begin to think beyond your current circumstances while always reaching for a positive preference.

Let wisdom lead the way. Whether you are writing one long story or a series of short stories, it is imperative to use your past experiences and old excuses in a new empowering way. They will be your catalyst to transition from an old story to a new structure. Use the tools of discernment and decision to re-write your story in those areas where your version is old and obsolete. Learn from the past and always think with a new end in sight. Life is about growing yourself; let your triggers become your teachers.

We are all gifted with the ability to personally write the story of our life. Use the wisdom learned from your old story as the blueprint to your future. Become the proactive author of your own life and watch as the new story you stick to really starts working for you!
